He Told Them to Look at What They Were Actually Getting Out of It

This message is for the reader whose life is full and whose center has gone quiet

He is forty-one and there is nothing wrong.

That is not a figure of speech. There is a job, and it is a decent one. There is a house with a roof that does not leak. There are kids who talk to him, and a truck that starts, and a shelf of books he means to get to. If you asked anybody at work how he is doing they would say fine, and they would not be covering for him.

He gets in the truck at six-forty every morning and he cannot tell you the last time he felt anything about any of it.

Not sad. That is the part nobody has a word for. He is not sad, and he is not angry, and he is not in trouble. He is just running, and the running produces a life, and the life comes back to him with the weight of a paper bag.

He would not have used the word empty. He would have said busy.

The audit that opens the book

There is a book of two chapters near the back of the Old Testament, and it is written to people who are working hard and getting nowhere they can feel. Here is how it opens, in the King James Version:

Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. (Haggai 1:5-6)

Read that list again and notice what it does not say. It does not say they were lazy. It says they sowed much. It does not say they had nothing; it says they had food and drink and clothes and wages. Every single item on the list is a description of a functioning life.

What is missing from the list is any return. Sown much, bring in little. Eat, and not enough. Wages into a bag with holes.

That is a diagnosis of the condition a man cannot name when he is in it, and God is the one giving it, and He gives it without one word of contempt in the whole paragraph.

You are not being accused here, and you were never the one who had to spot this on your own. Haggai 1 opens with a plain audit rather than a charge, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a better mood who makes a man able to read a sentence like that as help.

He asks the question and then answers it Himself

Most of the time when a hard question gets asked from a platform, the asking is the whole point and the answer is left hanging over the room. That is not what happens here.

Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house. (Haggai 1:9)

Why? saith the LORD of hosts. He asks it, and then He answers it in the same verse, and He does not make them guess.

There is something in that worth sitting with. The person being addressed is not required to work out the diagnosis before help arrives. The diagnosis is handed over. And what He names is not a moral collapse. It is an ordering problem: something central went unattended while everything else got attended to, and the man doing the attending had no way of feeling the difference from the inside.

That is exactly how this happens. Nobody decides on a Tuesday to let the middle of their life go quiet. It goes quiet the way a room goes cold, by degrees, while somebody is busy in the next room with a job that genuinely needed doing.

You have not drifted somewhere God cannot address, and you were never asked to diagnose yourself before He would speak. The text has Him asking and answering in one verse of Haggai 1, and it is His Spirit who carries a sentence like that past a man's defenses instead of leaving it on the surface.

What He says before anybody picks up a tool

Here is the part that changes the shape of the whole book, and it is easy to read past because it is one short line.

The people hear the audit. And then, before a single board is lifted, before anything is fixed, before any evidence exists that they intend to do anything about it at all:

Then spake Haggai the LORD's messenger in the LORD's message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith the LORD. (Haggai 1:13)

I am with you. Present tense. Before the work.

Not I will be with you when the house is standing. Not I am with you if you get started this week. The sentence arrives in the gap between hearing the problem and doing anything about it, which is precisely the gap a man in this condition lives in.

Because that is the actual fear underneath the flatness, and it is not usually said out loud. The fear is not that God is angry. It is that He has quietly moved off, the way people do, and is waiting somewhere at a distance to see whether anything changes before He comes back.

Haggai 1:13 is God refusing to do that.

You are not being waited out at a distance, and you have His presence right now in the exact condition you are reading this in. The written word puts I am with you before one board is lifted, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a thing a man knows rather than a thing he has been told.

Who stirred the spirit

And then the work starts, and the text is careful about whose doing that was.

And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God. (Haggai 1:14)

The LORD stirred up the spirit. Of the governor. Of the priest. Of everybody left. Three times in one verse, and the verb belongs to God every time.

They did come and do the work. That is in there too. But the wanting is not credited to them, and this is the single most useful thing in the book for a man who has read every article about motivation and cannot manufacture any.

If what is missing is the wanting, the wanting is on the list of what He supplies.

A chapter later He puts a floor under it that reaches back centuries:

According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not. (Haggai 2:5)

My spirit remaineth. Not returns when things improve. Remains, through the whole flat stretch, on the strength of something He said a long time before any of them were born.

You have a stirred spirit available to you today, and it was never something you had to work up first. Haggai 1:14 credits the stirring to the LORD three times in one sentence, and Haggai 2:5 says His Spirit remains, which means the part you cannot do is the part that is already covered.

And if what is under this is not a quiet center but a floor actually giving way, that is a different thing and it is not a thing to carry alone. A doctor, a counselor, somebody you trust who will pick up the phone. In the United States the 988 crisis line answers day and night. Nothing on this page asks anybody to hold that by himself.

The breakthrough

So consider your ways, and let the consider be the thing God means by it rather than the thing your worst hour means by it.

He is not asking for an inventory of failures. He asked a working, functioning, tired group of people to look honestly at the return on what they were spending themselves on, and then He answered His own question so nobody had to sit in it.

You are not far off and you have not been written off. The written word puts I am with you in Haggai 1:13 ahead of any repair at all, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than a recovered feeling who makes that present tense real in a man.

And the wanting is not your assignment to generate. You have a God who stirs a spirit, and yours is on that list. Haggai 1:14 credits the stirring to the LORD three separate times in one verse, and Haggai 2:5 says His Spirit remains among His people on the strength of a promise older than the problem, so the thing you cannot start is the thing He starts.

Nothing here promises the feeling turns up on a schedule. The man in the truck went weeks. What is promised is that the audit was never a verdict and the presence is not conditional, and you were included in that sentence before you gave anybody a reason to include you (Haggai 1:13, Haggai 2:5), and it is His Spirit rather than your intensity who turns reading a verse out loud into receiving something.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over your own condition is genuinely yours, handed to you and never invented. God asked a tired and functioning people to consider their ways and then told them He was with them before they moved, so speak to the flatness in the middle of a full life: you have standing to address it because He addressed it first and did it without contempt. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own opinion, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is Haggai 1:13 and Haggai 1:14 handed back in your own voice, and it is His Spirit, not the volume of your saying, that makes saying it a receiving.

  1. Full life with a quiet center, you are not proof that God has moved off, and you are not the whole of what is here. The Word of God says I am with you, saith the LORD, and He said it before one board was lifted.
  2. Fear that He stepped back to watch, you are finished in the name of Jesus. I am not being waited out, because Scripture says His Spirit remains among His people on a promise older than my problem.
  3. Father, You stir a spirit and You have never asked me to manufacture the wanting first. I receive what Your word says You do in Haggai 1, and I am asking You to stir mine, and I am reading one verse out loud today because You are with me while I do it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
