He Told Her What She Had Not Said, and She Stayed at the Well

This message is for the reader who has never once been named accurately and stayed in the room

He has been managing what people know about him for so long that he does it in his sleep.

It is not lying. He would want that clear. He has never told anybody a false thing about himself. What he does is more skillful than that and harder to name: he arranges what is available. He decides what goes in the account, and the account is true, and it is not the whole account, and nobody has ever noticed a gap because there is no gap in what he gives them.

And he is tired in a way that he cannot explain to anybody, because the tiredness comes from the maintenance and the maintenance is invisible.

What he wants and cannot have is to be known. He has known that for years. What he has never let himself think about is that being known would require somebody to say the whole of it back to him, and he is not sure he could stay in the room while that happened.

There is a woman at a well at midday who found out what that is like.

Why she was there at that hour

Here is the setup, in the King James Version:

There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. (John 4:7)

And a few verses earlier: and it was about the sixth hour.

The sixth hour is noon. Water was drawn in the morning, by groups of women together, and coming at noon alone is a detail John records because it means something. She is arranging her life around not being seen.

That is the same skill, and it costs the same thing, and she has been paying it for a long time.

You are recognized in that detail and you were never the only one arranging a life around this. John 4:6 puts the sixth hour in the account on purpose, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than a change in your circumstances who makes an old detail land on a man's own week.

What He offers before He names anything

And this is the part that is almost always told in the wrong order, and the order is the whole thing.

Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. (John 4:10)

He would have given thee living water.

That comes before any of it. Before the question about the husband, before the history, before a single accurate thing is said about her life, He has already offered her the thing.

The offer is not contingent on the conversation that follows. It is made first, to somebody He already knows everything about, and it is made without conditions.

Which means by the time He says the hard thing, the offer is already on the table and she knows it, and that changes what the hard thing is.

You have the offer made before the naming and you were never going to be told the truth about yourself with nothing on the table. John 4:10 puts the living water in the conversation before anything is named, and it is His Spirit who makes an offer arriving first the reason a man can survive the second half.

What He says, and the two words

Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. (John 4:16-18)

Thou hast well said.

He commends her sentence. She had given a short, technically true, carefully bounded answer, which is exactly the skill this article is about, and He says she said well.

And then He says the whole of it.

For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband.

That is the entire account, said out loud, by a stranger, at a well, in the middle of the day.

And then, in case anybody missed the tone: in that saidst thou truly. He says it twice, at both ends. He commends her partial answer before he completes it and again after.

That is not a trap being sprung. That is somebody holding what she gave him and adding the rest, gently, without one word of comment about any of it.

Notice what He does not do. He does not say what she should have done. He does not ask how it happened. He does not mention the man she is with. He states it and stops.

You are held while it is said and you were never going to be commented on. John 4:18 has Him say the whole history and stop, with the commendation on both sides of it, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an accurate sentence about a man's life something he can stay in the room for.

And if what you are carrying has gone somewhere heavier, if it has reached not wanting to be here at all, that is not a thing to hold alone. A doctor, a counselor, somebody you trust who will pick up the phone. In the United States the 988 crisis line answers day and night. Nobody is asked to carry that by himself.

She stayed, and then she told everybody

Here is the thing that matters most and it is easy to skip because it happens in the next paragraph.

She did not leave.

She could have. She had every reason to. A stranger had just said her whole history out loud in a public place and she was there alone at noon specifically to avoid being seen.

She stayed, and asked Him a question about worship, and the conversation went on, and He said something to her that He does not say plainly to anybody else in that Gospel:

Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. (John 4:26)

And then she went into the town and did the opposite of everything she had been doing:

Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? (John 4:29)

Which told me all things that ever I did.

That is what she leads with. The thing she had been arranging her whole life to prevent is the thing she goes and tells people about, and she tells it as the good news rather than as the cost.

Because it turned out that being fully known and not left was the thing she actually needed, and she had never been able to imagine it because she had never seen it done.

You are able to stay in the room and you have not been building toward a moment that ends you. John 4:29 has her lead with the very thing she had hidden, and it is His Spirit who makes being known the thing a man wants rather than the thing he fears.

The breakthrough

So say it out loud, plainly, alone, and let it be the whole of it.

He offered the living water before He named anything. He commended her careful, technically true, partial answer at both ends. And then He said the rest of it and made no comment at all.

You are offered something before you are named and you have not been walking toward a reckoning. The written word puts the living water in John 4:10 before the husband question in John 4:16, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than a braver disposition who makes an accurate sentence about a man survivable.

And what she did with it afterward is the answer to the fear. You have the possibility of being fully known and not left, and you were never going to be commented on. John 4:29 has her go and lead with which told me all things that ever I did, which is the thing she had arranged a whole life to prevent.

Nothing here promises it is comfortable. The man who told one person calls the following six hours the worst of his adult life. What is promised is that the offer came first and the naming came without comment, and you were met at a well at the hour you chose to avoid people (John 4:10, John 4:18), and it is His Spirit rather than your courage who makes saying it out loud a receiving.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over your own condition is genuinely yours, handed to you and never invented. Somebody offered a woman living water before He said one accurate thing about her life, and then said the whole of it and made no comment, so speak to the arranging you have been doing for years: you have standing to address it because Scripture addressed it first and did it with tenderness. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own opinion, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is John 4:10 and John 4:18 handed back in your own voice, and it is His Spirit, not the courage behind your saying, that makes saying it a receiving.

  1. Fear of being named accurately, you are not what happened at that well. The Word of God has Him say thou hast well said on both sides of the whole history and add not one word of comment.
  2. Maintenance I have been paying for years, you are finished in the name of Jesus. Scripture has her go into the town and lead with the very thing she had arranged her life to hide.
  3. Father, You offered the living water before You named anything, and the offer was already on the table when the rest got said. I receive what Your word says in John 4, and I am saying the thing out loud today in plain words.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
