The voice does not lie. That is what makes it so hard to answer.
It does not exaggerate and it does not invent. It gives dates. It has the details right, including details nobody else knows, and it puts them in an order that is completely accurate and lands exactly where it is aimed.
And a man cannot argue with it, because every item on the list is true, and he was there.
So over about twenty years he has developed the only defense available to somebody who cannot dispute the evidence, which is to keep his head down and not draw attention. He does not pray about certain things. He does not put himself forward. He has an internal sense of what he is allowed to reach for and he stays well inside it, and he would describe that as knowing his place.
There is a courtroom scene in a small prophet where a man in exactly that position is standing in filthy clothes with somebody beside him doing the listing.
The scene, and who is in it
Here it is, in the King James Version:
And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. (Zechariah 3:1)
Three parties. The accused, the LORD's angel, and one more standing at the right hand to resist him.
The right hand is the position an advocate takes. Somebody has taken the seat of the man's counsel and is using it to work against him, which is a precise description of what an internal accusing voice actually does. It speaks from inside, in the position of the one who is supposed to be for you.
And then the state of the accused:
Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. (Zechariah 3:3)
Clothed with filthy garments. The text does not dispute this. It states it as fact. Whatever is being said about this man is not slander.
Which is the whole difficulty and the whole point. The accusation is accurate. That is why an accurate accusation needs an answer rather than a denial.
You are not being called a liar about your own history and you were never going to win this by disputing the evidence. Zechariah 3:3 states the filthy garments as fact while the man is still standing there, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than a cleaner record who makes an accurate charge answerable.
Who answers, and what the answer is
Now watch who speaks. Not Joshua. He says nothing in the entire scene.
And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? (Zechariah 3:2)
The LORD said unto Satan. The accuser is addressed directly by somebody else. The accused is not asked for a response and does not give one.
And the answer is not a defense of Joshua's conduct. Nobody argues that the garments are clean. The answer is is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?
A brand is a piece of burning wood pulled out of a fire. It is charred. It is not a clean object and nobody claims it is. What it is, is something somebody reached in and took out, and the whole of its standing comes from the reaching rather than from its condition.
That is the answer given to an accurate accusation: not that the charge is false, but that the man is a rescued object and the rescue is the fact that outranks the charge.
You are answered by somebody else and you were never required to make the case yourself. Zechariah 3:2 has the LORD address the accuser directly while the accused says nothing, and it is His Spirit who makes being defended a thing a man can rest in rather than deflect.
The change of clothes, and who does it
Then the garments.
And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. (Zechariah 3:4)
Take away the filthy garments from him. Somebody else does the removing. It is not Joshua's job and he is not asked to help.
I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee. Past tense. Announced, not negotiated.
And I will clothe thee with change of raiment. Also somebody else's work.
Every single verb in the transaction belongs to somebody other than the man in the middle of it. He arrives filthy, says nothing, and leaves dressed, and the only thing he does in the whole scene is stand there.
And then a detail that the prophet apparently could not help adding, because he speaks up in the next verse and asks for a clean turban to be put on the man's head, and it is done. Even the bystander gets to participate more than the accused does.
You have iniquity that was caused to pass from you and you were never doing the changing. Zechariah 3:4 says I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee in the past tense with the verb belonging to God, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a completed transaction something a man walks around inside of.
And if the voice has gone past accusation into somewhere darker, if it has reached not wanting to be here, that is not a thing to hold alone. A doctor, a counselor, somebody you trust who will pick up the phone. In the United States the 988 crisis line answers day and night. Nobody is asked to carry that by himself.
What the New Testament says the accusing is
This is not an isolated vision. The pattern is named directly in two other places.
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. (Revelation 12:10)
Which accused them before our God day and night. The word accuser is the job description, and the frequency given is continuous.
Which means the persistence of the voice is not evidence that it is right. Persistence is simply what it does.
And Paul, who asks the question and then does not answer it in the way anybody expects:
Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. (Romans 8:33-34)
Who is he that condemneth? Paul does not answer that no one has anything to say. He answers with who is at the right hand, which is the same position the accuser had taken in Zechariah's courtroom.
The seat is occupied by somebody else now.
You have the right hand occupied by your own advocate and you were never left with the other one there. Romans 8:34 puts Christ at the right hand making intercession, and it is His Spirit who makes an occupied seat something a man knows rather than argues.
So name the thing and bring it as itself, and let somebody else do the answering.
The accusation in that vision is accurate and nobody disputes it. The garments are filthy and the text says so. What happens is that the accuser gets addressed by somebody else, and the accused is asked for nothing at all.
You are a brand plucked out of the fire and you were never going to be defended on your condition. The written word says is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? in Zechariah 3:2, which answers a true charge with a rescue rather than a denial, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than a clean record who makes that answer stand up in a man.
And the changing was never your work. You have iniquity caused to pass from you and you were never handed the removal job. Zechariah 3:4 puts every verb on God's side and Romans 8:34 says Christ is at the right hand making intercession, which is the seat the accuser had been standing in.
Nothing here promises the voice goes quiet. The man with the notebook says it has not and he does not expect it to. What is promised is that the accusation is answered by somebody else while the accused says nothing, and you were stood there in filthy garments and dressed without being asked to help (Zechariah 3:2, Zechariah 3:4), and it is His Spirit rather than your defense who makes naming one thing out loud a receiving.
Declare this over yourself
Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over your own condition is genuinely yours, handed to you and never invented. A vision puts an accused man in filthy garments with an accuser at his right hand, and the accusation is answered by somebody else while the accused says nothing at all, so speak to the voice that lists your own record back to you accurately: you have standing to address it because Scripture addressed it first and did it without contempt. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own opinion, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is Zechariah 3:2 and Zechariah 3:4 handed back in your own voice, and it is His Spirit, not the force of your saying, that makes saying it a receiving.
- Voice listing my own record back to me, you are not the one who gets answered. The Word of God has the LORD turn and address the accuser directly while the accused man says nothing at all.
- Filthy garments I have been standing in, you are finished in the name of Jesus. Scripture says take away the filthy garments from him, and somebody other than the man does the taking.
- Father, You said You have caused my iniquity to pass from me, and You said it in the past tense. I receive what Your word says in Zechariah 3 and Romans 8, and I am naming the thing out loud today and letting You do the answering.
Zechariah 3:1-5
