The First Twist in the Bible Was a Question About a Real Command

He can spot a lie. What he cannot spot is a true thing pointed the wrong way.

That is the actual gap and it took him a long time to locate it. He is not gullible. If somebody says something false he generally knows, and if somebody says something he cannot check he holds it loosely.

The trouble is with the other category, which nobody warned him about: statements that are entirely accurate, that would survive any check he could run, and that are doing something other than what they appear to be doing.

He has no instrument for those. Every test he has is a test for truth of content, and content is not where the problem is.

There is a conversation at the beginning of the Bible that is the first recorded distortion, and it is worth noticing that it is not a lie.

Move one: a question, not a claim

Here it is, in the King James Version:

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? (Genesis 3:1)

Yea, hath God said.

The first move is a question, and it is a question about something God actually said. There was a command. It is in the previous chapter. Nothing is being invented here.

But look at what the question does with it. God's command in Genesis 2 is expansive and then narrow:

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it. (Genesis 2:16-17)

Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat. That is the first half and it is enormous, and it comes first.

The question in Genesis 3:1 keeps the prohibition and deletes the permission, and rearranges what is left so the whole thing sounds like a restriction.

Not one false word. A real command, quoted with the generous half removed.

You are dealing with something the Bible describes on its first pages and you were never facing an unnamed technique. Genesis 3:1 opens with a question about a real command with the permission removed, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than a sharper mind who lets a man see a shape rather than only check a fact.

Move two: the outright denial

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die. (Genesis 3:4)

Ye shall not surely die.

That one is a flat contradiction and it comes second. It is the only false statement in the conversation and it does not arrive until the ground has been prepared by a question about something true.

That order is worth having. The lie is not the opening move. The opening move is a rearrangement of something accurate, and its job is to change the shape of the room so that the flat statement can be received in it.

Which is why a man who is watching for lies will not catch this. By the time the false thing arrives, everything before it has been checkable and has checked out, and the checking has established a kind of credit.

You are able to watch the sequence rather than only the statements and you were never given the wrong faculties. Genesis 3:4 puts the only false sentence second, after a true one used sideways, and it is His Spirit who makes an order of moves visible to a man rather than only their content.

Move three: a true statement about God

And then the third move, which is the strangest and the most useful.

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. (Genesis 3:5)

Your eyes shall be opened.

That happens. Genesis 3:7 says it in almost the same words: and the eyes of them both were opened.

Knowing good and evil. And God Himself says later in the chapter: behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil.

So the third move is factually correct in its content and is confirmed by the narrator and by God, and it is the most destructive sentence in the conversation.

Because what makes it work is not its accuracy. It is the clause at the front: for God doth know. An accurate prediction is placed inside a claim about God's motive, and the motive is the payload, and nobody can check a motive.

That is the whole technique in one sentence, and it is the answer to the man who has no instrument. The test is not: is this true. The test is: what does this say about God, and would He have said it that way.

You have a test that works on shape rather than content and you were never going to catch this by checking facts. Genesis 3:5 puts an accurate prediction inside a false claim about God's motive, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes what a thing says about God the thing a man notices first.

How He answered it Himself

And the answer, which is worth studying because Jesus faced the identical technique and used one method.

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4)

Every word. Not a word. Every word, which is the direct answer to a quotation with half of it removed.

And when the accuser quotes a psalm at Him accurately in the next round, He does not dispute the quotation. He answers with more Scripture, which restores the shape.

And two sentences that name the technique plainly:

When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. (John 8:44)

And:

And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 11:14)

An angel of light. Which is a description of presentation rather than of content, and it is the reason a content test is not enough.

You have a method that restores the whole and you were never going to win this by arguing a fact. Matthew 4:4 answers a partial quotation with every word and it is His Spirit who makes reading the whole of a thing the practical form of discernment.
